Yulianti’s Mazedo: Traditional Herbal Drink Now Popular Among Young People
En.peweimalang.com – Perseverance and innovation have been the keys to success for Yulianti (55), the founder of Mazedo, a small business producing traditional Indonesian drinks (wedang) that have captured the interest of younger generations. From a simple home experiment, she successfully created Wedang Telang Jeruk Nipis — a refreshing and healthy butterfly pea and lime beverage.
Mazedo was founded in 2019, just before the pandemic hit. It first gained recognition through wedang uwuh and instant ginger products, later expanding to a wide range of variants including herbal coffee, instant temulawak, candied ginger, original red ginger, turmeric powder, kaempferia galanga powder, and jakuser (a citrus-based brew).
The breakthrough came when Yulianti teamed up with a young crew from Ciputra University to target Generation Z. Determined to make traditional wedang appealing to younger palates, they invented the vibrant wedang telang jeruk nipis.
The journey wasn’t smooth—Yulianti admits she went through about 10 kilograms of limes to perfect the ideal flavor.
Today, Mazedo products are sold exclusively online via platforms like Shopee and PaDi UMKM. Remarkably, sales thrive without paid ads, powered instead by an affiliate system involving social media users.
Each sachet is priced at just Rp5,000 and brews perfectly with 200 ml of water. What sets Mazedo apart is the inclusion of nutrition facts on every package, helping buyers track calories and benefits.
“We can check the calories from the nutrition facts. So Gen Z kids or young people on diets or cutting sugar can stay aware through the info on my product packaging,” Yulianti shared during the UMKM Bazaar at Brawijaya University on Tuesday (4/11/2025).
Beyond retail, Yulianti welcomes bulk orders from café owners or street vendors (angkringan). She acknowledges the biggest challenge: fierce competition from similar products.
“The challenge is the abundance of identical items out there, but as an MSME supported by young innovators, I can keep innovating and growing,” she added.
With a spirit of innovation and a modern twist, Mazedo has transformed from a classic herbal drink into a cross-generational healthy lifestyle staple.
